Thousands expected to join PNG anti-corruption walk

12:48 pm on 12 June 2009

About 4,000 people in Papua New Guinea are expected to take part in anti-corruption walks this Sunday.

The Walk Against Corruption is organised by Transparency International PNG in the capital, Port Moresby, and in Kokopo in East New Britain.

Its chairman, Peter Aitsi, says a key driver for the walk, which is now in its third year, is to allow the general public to get involved in the work of TI and to consider the implications of the widespread corruption for PNG.

"What we have found as we have dealt with the work of advocating the fight against corruption is that most the grassroots and general public don't feel that they can play a part in the fight against corruption. Well with the Walk Against Corruption this is their little way of demonstrating their opposition to corruption. The second part is obviously as a fund raising activity to support the operations of TI."

Peter Aitsi says the Walk will begin at 6.30 on Sunday morning, with the Governor General Sir Paulias Matane, starting the event.
