Kaikōura District Council chief executive Angela Oosthuizen said lifting it in time for Christmas was a significant achievement by council staff and contractors.

However, the notice still applies to the Oaro, Fernleigh, east coast rural and Peketa supply.

Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Ramon Pink said people visiting Kaikōura for the holidays should still take precautions.

If they were staying at a house that had not been used since the quakes, they needed to inspect the pipes and tanks for damage, and run the taps for 10 minutes to ensure untreated water was flushed from the system, he said.
