Wellington is still the film capital of the country, while Auckland is its television hub, data released today shows.
The Statistics New Zealand data showed total revenue from the screen industry was about $3.2 billion last year, up $7 million from 2013.
Ninety-one percent of businesses in the industry were small businesses with annual takings of less than $500,000.
Most funding and financing received for film or television production came from government sources, with its funding rising by 10 percent, to almost $260 million, including an increase of $22 million from public broadcasters.
However, though total funding increased, the number of businesses receiving it dropped from 178 business to 156.
Auckland and Wellington remain New Zealand's screen industry hubs, with the capital pulling in $711 million, mostly from film production work.
The Wellington region is home to Oscar-winning directors James Cameron and Sir Peter Jackson, as well as special effects company Weta Workshop.
Auckland's total revenue was $2.3 million, of which about $1.4 million came from television broadcasting.
Seventy-six percent of screen businesses nationwide used Auckland as their location for production or post-production, compared to just 38 percent in Wellington.
