Kohanga and Government reach agreement

18:57 pm on 23 February 2013

The Government and the kohanga reo movement have reached an agreement on a Waitangi Tribunal recommendation.

They have been in talks since the release of a Waitangi Tribunal report on Maori pre-schools in October.

The report issued five recommendations including that the Government apologise for severe prejudice shown to kohanga by successive governments and that an independent advisor be appointed by, and report directly to, the Prime Minister.

Education Minister Hekia Parata indicates there has been progress and says she's left it to the Kohanga National Trust to update whanau.

The Kohanga Reo National Trust says the topic of Maori language nests will be discussed at Cabinet on Tuesday.
