15:33 pm on 27 May 2009

The Japanese Government has agreed to spend nearly 22 million US dollars to implement drinking water improvement projects in Honiara and Malaita's provincial capital, Auki.

The paper, the Solomon Star, says Japan's Prime Minister, Taro Aso, revealed this to his Solomon Islands counterpart, Dr Derek Sikua, when they met on Hokkaido last week.

The bilateral meeting was held in conjunction of the Fifth Pacific Leaders Summit Meeting that ended on Saturday.

Mr Aso also said that Japan will soon authorise the rehabilitation of the Gizo Hospital in the Western province.

The hospital was destroyed during the April 2006 earthquake and tsunami that hit Western and Choiseul Provinces.
