American Samoa House budget committee holds meeting on fiber optic cable

11:58 am on 13 March 2008

The American Samoa territorial House Budget and Appropriations Committee will hold a third hearing today about the government's initiative to connect the territory to fiber optic cable.

Tasi Tuiteleleapaga the governor's chief counsel, is scheduled to testify at the hearing.

Committee chairman, Representative, Laolagi Vaeao, is quoted by the Samoa News as saying that hopefully Tuitelelepaga will be able to answer questions raised by the committee concerning the government's investment in the project, the parties involved and funding.

The government is pursuing two fiber optic projects but it's the PacRim East cable project that the committee is seeking clarification on since the government's share is $9 million.

The committee is reviewing a proposal to include the fiber optic project as a priority project to get funding from the $20 million loan from the government employee retirement fund.
