Waikato University and the national organisation for kapa haka - Te Matatini have signed an agreement to develop and enhance Maori performing arts.
The partnership ties in with the university's commitment to having a strong and positive presence in Maori events and complements the fact that many staff and students have been involved in Te Matatini as organisers, judges or performers.
University of Waikato Vice-Chancellor Professor Roy Crawford said the university's strategic partnership with Te Matatini was part of an on-going commitment to developing and enhancing its Maori distinctiveness.
Te Matatini chair Herewini Parata said he was proud to be associated with the University of Waikato.
He said when Te Matatini looked for a strategic partner they wanted to ensure that they subscribed to the same kaupapa as its organisation.
Mr Parata said Te Matatini was about excellence in kapa haka, the University of Waikato was about excellence in education so there was a natural fit.
