Police have released the name of the man shot and killed by a fellow hunter on Stewart Island yesterday.

He was Samuel Phillip Long, 24, of Invercargill.

Mr Long was part of a five person hunting group, but was hunting alone when he was shot by another member of the group.

Police were alerted by Maritime New Zealand after an emergency beacon was activated in the Paterson Inlet area of Stewart Island on Monday, but Mr Long died at the scene.
