Spending using credit, debit and charge cards has fallen.
Official figures show spending using electronic cards fell a seasonally-adjusted 0.6 percent in February when compared with the month before, when it notched a strong gain.
People spent less on items around the home, including furniture and electronics.
Core retail spending, which excludes the vehicle sector, fell 0.7 percent last month, following a solid January result.
On an annual basis, retail spending climbed 2.6 percent to hit $4.8 billion in the year to February.
