The southbound lane of State Highway 2 has been closed at Whakamārama in the Bay of Plenty after a serious crash, police say.
Emergency services were responding to the site on Saturday night, after a person was seriously injured after being ejected from the vehicle.
The crash happened near the intersection of Wainui South Road, about 7:45pm.
The highway remained open to northbound traffic, but police said those heading south should avoid the area.
It came the same day three people died and 15 others were injured in two separate crashes near Tekapo on State Highway 8 in Canterbury.
The official Easter holiday period runs from 4pm, Thursday 28 March, until 6am on Tuesday 2 April.
Last year, only one person was killed on New Zealand roads during the Easter period, but the count was five dead in the same period in 2022, and seven in 2021.
