A police spokesman said the hives were found in Waiomio, following an increasing number of beehive thefts in the region.

He said the number of hives seized was substantial and would be worth tens of thousands of dollars.

The most recent thefts were last month, when six hives were taken from Kauri, north of Whangarei, and 22 from Oromahoe also in Northland.
