A new proposal released by the government on Wednesday includes a 45-metre wharf exension of Halsey Street Wharf to accommodate Team New Zealand and one challenger.

The poll was commissioned by lobby group, Stop Stealing Our Harbour. Spokesperson Michael Goldwater said only 27percent of those surveyed were in favour of the new proposal.

He said the village should be built on existing land at Wynyard Point.

"The key thing is there's incredible irony that we're planning to use the world's premier sailing event to concrete in the harbour," he said.

Five hundred people were surveyed for the poll, which has a margin of error of 4.4 percent.
