The chair of the Hawke's Bay Regional Council has resigned, much to the surprise of the community and staff.
Rex Graham announced his resignation today, citing health reasons.
He said the return of his cancer meant he could not give the energy and commitment required to properly serve the council and community.
He said he was proud of his involvement with the Napier Port initial public offering, which let them build a new wharf.
He remained disappointed however that the council continued to allow the burning of green wood.
Council chief executive James Palmer thanked Graham for his tireless work on behalf of the region.
