09:36 am on 16 May 2010

A man who stabbed 29 school children and three teachers in China has been reportedly sentenced to death after a half-day trial.

The man, 47, unemployed, was found guilty of attacking a kindergarten in Taixing city in eastern Jiangsu province on 29 April.

The Xinhua news agency says the man told the court his motive was to vent his rage against society.

There has been a series of attacks at schools in China, claiming the lives of 27 people and wounding more than 80 since March.

The BBC reports there has been much speculation on the cause of the attacks.

Premier Wen Jiabao said this week the outburst of violence has deep-seated roots in social tensions that need addressing.

On Wednesday, seven children and two adults were hacked to death at a kindergarten near Hanzhong city in Shaanxi province. Xinhua reported the attacker later killed himself.

On 24 March, a man stabbed to death eight pupils at a school in Fujian province. He was executed soon afterwards.
