A man who died after jumping into a river while fleeing police in Bay of Plenty last week has been named.

He was Norman Te Rangi, 24, from Kawerau.

Police said an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death continued.

There was a warrant for Mr Te Rangi's arrest when he was spotted by officers in Kawerau on Thursday.

He ran towards the Tarawera River, jumped into the water and quickly got into difficulty.

Officers pulled him out and tried to resuscitate him but he died at the scene.
