Vehicle importers welcome ETS levy proposal

Vehicle importers say they stand to be much better off if recommendations from the Government's Emissions Trading Scheme review are adopted.

Most new and used vehicles come under the ETS because of the synthetic greenhouse gas in their air-conditioning units.

The review panel recommends a levy be placed on vehicles falling under the scheme as they are entering the country.

The Motor Industry Association says that is exactly what is needed, as the current regime would prove to be very cumbersome. It says a simple levy at the border will reduce administration and compliance costs.

Chief executive Perry Kerr says the industry is very confident the levy solution will be adopted.
