If you live in central Wellington, you've probably seen or heard of Mittens – the Turkish angora cat with over 50,000 Facebook followers.
Mittens is often seen casually wandering the city streets alone and popping into workplaces – even a strip club once.
His 'guardian' Silvio Bruinsma tells Jesse Mulligan about Mittens and an upcoming exhibition celebrating His Royal Floofiness.
Listen to Silvio Bruinsma on Afternoons
Mittens is a very inquisitive and friendly cat who gets grumpy when he's inside for too long, Silvio says.
He wanders around in a one-kilometre radius, sometimes jumping into cars, but locals know to keep an eye out for him and not feed him.
During lockdown, Mittens' fan art posted on the Facebook page took off and the Wellington Museum asked Silvio if they could make an exhibition of it. Mittens - Floofy and Famous opens on 4 July.
There is also Mittens merch on the way, Silvio says. T-shirts embroidered with Mittens' likeness will soon be available with all profits going to the SPCA.
