13:34 pm on 14 December 2011

The United States Federal Reserve left interest rates at almost zero on Tuesday.

After its last meeting of the year, the Fed reiterated its intention to keep interest rates at "exceptionally low levels'' until ''mid-2013''.

The bank has held overnight interest rates at almost zero since December 2008 and has bought $US2.3 trillion in government and mortgage-related bonds.
