Government plans to boost export jobs 'not enough'

19:56 pm on 1 July 2010

Some exporters say the Government's bid to boost the sector will fail unless it makes extensive changes to fiscal and monetary policy.

Finance Minister Bill English on Wednesday released a statement saying he's focused on reversing a fall in export jobs.

He says he's confident the measures in this year's Budget will create more jobs in the export industry over the longer term.

Manufacturers and Exporters Association chief executive John Walley says the Government isn't doing enough to encourage investment.

He says it needs to give the Reserve Bank more power to control the exchange rate and give the incentives to manufacturers that other countries give theirs.
