Fatal boating accident

A man died after a boating accident at Opua in the Bay of Islands on Sunday morning.

Police said the man aged 68, was thrown from his dinghy following a collision with a 12 metre yacht as the yacht was coming in to Opua.

Crew members from the R. Tucker Thompson witnessed the collision and pulled him from the water, but their attempts at resuscitation were not successful.

Police and Maritime New Zealand have been interviewing witnesses and the crew of the yacht.

The dinghy is still to be recovered.
