The man who admitted to killing New Caledonia's most wanted fugitive Ramon Noraro this week has been charged with murder.
The prosecution said the as yet unnamed 27-year-old man has also been charged with attempted murder for shooting and injuring a man running away from the scene.
The gunman reportedly said he acted in legitimate defence after disturbances within the village of St Louis near which there have been weeks of clashes with police.
Investigations into the violence are continuing and six people, including minors, are still wanted.
So far 16 people have been detained over the spate of related violence and five have been jailed, including two minors.
