Fiji's Police Commissioner, Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho, has told his staff it is vital they improve their skills for confronting gender based violence.
He opened the 4th in a series of workshops on Monday for his staff run by the Fiji Women's Crisis Centre.
The workshop involves 37 officers, including five women, who are heads of their units, formations and districts in Fiji's Southern Division.
It aims to give police staff an understanding of gender, violence against women and girls, and to increase their skills and sensitivity in responding appropriately.
Mr Qiliho said the main focus of police had to be ensuring cases are investigated thoroughly and perpetrators taken to court.
