Organisers of Rugby World Cup have posted a tournament loss of $8 million less than forecast.
The organisation responsible for arranging the tournament, Rugby New Zealand 2011, on Wednesday announced a loss of $31 million for the tournament.
RNZ 2011 was a joint venture between the Government and the New Zealand Rugby Union.
It had been agreed two-thirds of the tournament loss would be covered by the Government and one third by the rugby union, with the NZRU's share of the loss capped at $10 million.
RNZ 2011 chairman Brian Roche says very few global sporting events come in under budget and to post a significantly better result than expected is an extraordinary achievement.
New Zealand won the tournament, beating France.
