US-affiliated islands demand recall of US health report

The American-affiliated Pacific Islands have demanded the recall of a scathing United States audit on health care.

Local health officials in the six islands were not given a chance to comment on the report which they say is full of factual errors.

Our correspondent, Giff Johnson, says while the officials acknowledge there are many problems delivering health care in the remote region, the tone is negative and research superficial.

"It had the sound of people walking into a hospital or health department, spending about an hour there and just what they could see they wrote about. So you know it was garbage overflowing and air conditioners not maintained and in that regard it was pretty superficial."

Giff Johnson says the US government provides tens of thousands in grants to the health departments in the six islands.
