Syrian refugees welcomed to New Zealand

21:32 pm on 23 January 2016

Neil Finn and the Topp Twins were among dozens of local musicians to welcome Syrian refugees to New Zealand with a concert.

About 1000 people, many of them picnicking in front of the stage, went to the show in Silo Park on Auckland's waterfront this evening.

The show acted as a fundraiser for the Red Cross, which coordinates support for refugees as they settle into life in New Zealand.

The first wave of an additional 600 Syrian refugees New Zealand agreed to accept arrived in Auckland a fortnight ago.

A 19-year-old Syrian refugee, Sharif, who spent two years in Lebanon before he and his mother were given places in New Zealand, joined Neil Finn on stage to help perform a rendition of the Crowded House hit, Don't Dream It's Over.
