A 24-year-old Rotorua man has been charged with the attempted murder of a police officer.

He's due to appear in court tomorrow.

The officer was knocked unconscious in the attack.

The police said he was making good progress and was in a stable condition in hospital.

The attack happened in the Rotorua suburb of Owhata last night.

The officer was arresting a man for an assault on a woman when another man jumped the fence and hit him on the head with an object.

The Bay of Plenty District Commander, Superintendent Andy McGregor, said it was a gutless attack on an officer.
