Substantial funding is being provided to help improve the Northern Marianas' dilapidated water distribution system.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently awarded the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation $US6.4 million for wastewater and drinking water infrastructure support.

The money will used for to provide 24-hour drinking water service to customers, improve water quality, and prevent water pollution.

Targeted projects include a program to detect and repair water pipeline leaks, supply line replacements, sewer system improvements and a new water tank near the Northern Marianas College.

Since 2010, the EPA has awarded over $US49 million in funds to improve water services.

The utility has said 70 percent of its supply is lost due to leaks, theft, and wastage.
