New Zealanders were treated to the first red supermoon in almost 40 years on Wednesday night.

A total lunar eclipse coincided with the moon being at its closest point to earth at 11.11, giving the moon a reddish hue.

Nelson-based space scientist Duncan Steel watched the event.
