Military ties between Fiji and China are likely to strengthen in the near future.

The Daily Post reports that Fiji's military commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, is making an official visit to China for talks with defence officials at the invitation of the People's Liberation Army.

China's defence minister, Cao Gangchuan, is quoted as saying China and Fiji should make a joint effort to promote the existing co-operation between the two armed forces.

Commodore Bainimarama said Fiji stood by its One-China policy in matters between Beijing and Taiwan.
