Leadership must be the focal point of this year's election, the leader of the Unity Fiji political party says.

Savenaca Narube was speaking on Friday at Nawaka village in Nadi at the announcement of his party's first batch of candidates.

Mr Narube said the root of problems in Fiji was political leadership that fed "on its own philosophies rather than putting people first".

The 14 candidates were the pioneers of the party whose strongest aspect was passion for change, to improve the lives of the poor and to provide equity for all ethnic groups, he said.

"Above all, we are passionate in building a Fiji which is free and fair. A Fiji which we can all call home and where we can live together in unity, peace, and prosperity."

Unity Fiji aims to field 51 candidates with the next batch announced at the end of May.
