Emerging local musicians are given two minutes to introduce one of their songs and say whatever they like about themselves and their music.
Name: Imugi (Carl + Yery)
Age: 18 x2
Hometown: Auckland
Sounds like: When you get butt-dialled from a club and you hear that bass pumping.
Musical Guilty Pleasure:
Yery: 2007 K-pop hits because I love being 12 and alive.
Carl: Yung Lean and Sad Boys because I'm white as hell lmao.
Formative Musical Experience:
Carl: I had been making "beats" on my computer ever since I was 14, but it wasn't until last year that I finally showed some friends what I had been making. The positive feedback I got from that was really encouraging and made me realise music was something I wanted to pursue further. After that I stopped viewing my music as "beats" and really got into trying to make each track an experience.
Yery: I used to hide behind real mediocre guitar-playing as a vessel or an excuse to make music because I thought in hiding behind it, no one knows who wrote the lyrics or made the song. It's real scary to have people hear my voice and my personal words, but I guess that process of making music where you just put so much emotion and soul into something is a continuous formative musical experience for me. It's chill.
