France imposes sanctions on Fiji over coup

14:08 pm on 22 December 2006

France says it is suspending military ties with Fiji and will no longer issue visas to Fiji officials after the overthrow of the government.

A French foreign ministry spokesman Jean-Baptiste Mattei says all military aircraft and vessel stopovers, in Fiji as well as on French territory, are suspended.

However, fishery monitoring activities by naval and military means, which benefit the entire region, are maintained.

Travel restrictions on the Fiji military regime have already been imposed by Australia, New Zealand and the US.
