Queenstown's public transport network could get a major shake-up, in an attempt to curb traffic congestion and parking problems.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council has announced a new plan, in conjunction with the Otago Regional Council and the Transport Agency, to move away from a dependency on cars.
Mayor Jim Boult said bus fares would be subsidised to a $2 flat fee with a concession card, and routes and timetables would be updated.
He says the proposal will mean a tough reality check, but some of the cost would be off-set by an increase in parking fees.
Ratepayers will be consulted through the annual plan process in April.
