PNG election gossip unnerves officials

15:10 pm on 19 June 2017

Police and election officials in Papua New Guinea have opened sealed containers full of election material to counter claims of tampering of ballot boxes on Manus island.

The action was taken after pressure built on social media as rumours swirled about foul play in the upcoming election.

The Post Courier reports that as a result, the Manus election manager and the provincial police commander invited all the candidates' scrutineers to witness and see for themselves the condition of the containers and their contents.

Officials says they hope the physical inspection has put to rest any concerns arising from the social media allegations.
