A police officer is in a serious condition after being struck by a vehicle in Counties Manukau.
One person has been taken into custody after the incident, which saw police deploy an Eagle helicopter and launch a major response, causing significant travel disruption.
Police swarmed Spaghetti Junction near Grafton, bringing traffic to a standstill.
The incident began about 7.20pm when police began tracking an vehicle alleged to have been stolen.
About 30 minutes later, an officer deployed road spikes on the corner of Manukau Station Road and Osterley Way in an attempt to stop the car.
The officer was struck by the vehicle, which continued driving.
The vehicle was located a short time later under Grafton Road, and the driver was detained just after 9pm on Khyber Pass Road, police said.
"Our thoughts are with the officer and their family," Counties Manukau District Commander Superintendent Jill Rogers said.
"This was a traumatic incident for those involved and I want to acknowledge the support offered by the officer's colleagues and members of the public."
An eye witness told RNZ the scene had been hectic.
"We were in the Domain walking the dog when we heard all these police cars roaring up and the police helicopter, we saw they blocked off the northbound lane and there was a car on the side of the road pointing the other way."
