Yusuf Islam, better known as Cat Stevens will join local artists Marlon Williams, Maisey Rika, Hollie Smith and Teeks in honouring the victims of the Christchurch terrorist attack, at this Friday's national day of remembrance.
Communities around New Zealand and across the world are set to come together for Ko Tātou, Tātou / We Are One, a national remembrance day to be held in North Hagley Park from 10am this Friday, March 29.
The service will be broadcast live on RNZ National, RNZ's Facebook and YouTube channels. It will also be available at simultaneous events in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin and in regional towns throughout New Zealand, and live streamed on TVNZ One and via the One News Now livestream.
The event is being jointly led by the Muslim community, Ngāi Tahu, the city of Christchurch, and the Government.
It will include musical performances from Yusuf/Cat Stevens, Marlon Williams, Maisey Rika, Hollie Smith and Teeks.
Christchurch mayor Lianne Dalziel says the service will be an opportunity for people across New Zealand and around the world to come together with their communities.
“The outpouring of love and support shown to our Muslim brothers and sisters has been heartfelt and has been received in the spirit in which it has been offered.
“It is in coming together as one, standing shoulder to shoulder, that gives expression to this unity and that’s what will see us through.”
Christchurch event logistics
The Christchurch City Council is advising people to allow plenty of time to travel to the event, with large numbers expected to attend, and many roads around North Hagley Park closed to all traffic and pedestrians.
Maps showing the event site, entry points and road closures will be released as soon as possible.
As the National Remembrance Service is being held on a weekday, parking in the central city will be extremely limited. People wanting to attend are advised to take public transport, bike or scooter or park and walk in.
If possible, please avoid bringing bags. This will help prevent potential delays in getting into the event.
Regional events
A list of regional events is published on the Department of Internal Affairs website and will be updated regularly.
Livestream
A livestream of the Service will be run on RNZ National, RNZ's Facebook and YouTube channels, and on TVNZ Channel 1. People outside of New Zealand can watch via the One News Now livestream.
