The Prime Minister has shot down any hopes for an imminent travel bubble - despite Auckland Airport announcing its preparations for just that.

The airport plans to split its terminal into two zones to prevent mixing and mingling between travellers from different flights - a major concern with any bubble.

The prospect of a trans-Tasman bubble has been bandied about for some time - with New Zealand First's leader Winston Peters calling for one more than a month ago.

But a disastrous set-back in the Australian state of Victoria has seen a huge surge of infections there - and with it, tough restrictions on movements.

Jacinda Ardern told reporters that will clearly slow down progress toward any trans-Tasman travel.
