Mickelson set for breakthrough US Open title

05:53 am on 17 June 2013

For the first time in his career, the great American golfer Phil Mickelson has the outright lead after three rounds of a US Open championship, and as the only player under par, he tees off this morning a one shot leader over fellow Americans Hunter Mahan and veteran Steve Stricker, and the South African Charl Schwarzel.

Mickelson has had 5-runner up finishes at US Opens, and he's hoping today will bring him the best present on his 43rd birthday.

Of the top 15 players on the leaderboard, none has won a US Open, and only Mickelson and Schwarzel have won major titles.

New Zealand's Steven Alker is having a respectable final round at Merion, at 3-over par after with four holes to play.

The final group tees off at 7.20 this morning.
