The Government says the Novopay school payroll system is in better shape, but it is looking at whether it is worth reverting to the previous system and then introducing a new one.
Novopay Minister Steven Joyce told Radio New Zealand's Morning Report programme that there may be more pain if the payroll system is changed. A decision will be made in the next fortnight.
Mr Joyce said mistakes accounted for less than 0.5% of the 88,000 payments in the last payroll.
Principals Federation president Philip Harding earlier said Novopay has become a toxic brand and there are serious doubts about whether it can survive.
In a 3News Reid Research poll, 75% of respondents said the Government should dump Novopay.
The poll surveyed just over 1000 people and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1%.
