Strong winds and heavy rain has lashed much of the South Island with thousands of properties without power.
A man was killed after being hit by a falling branch in Mount Victoria in Wellington.
There are Orange strong wind and heavy rain warnings for parts of the South Island and the eastern and lower North Island.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand are battling several fires in Canterbury, with a flood warning also in place for the alpine rivers.
Meanwhile, flights out of Wellington Airport have resumed after several hours of delays and cancellations. Flights in Christchurch were also disrupted.
MetService said gusts reached up to 120km/h in the Wellington suburb of Kelburn overnight.
