Police have revealed more details of a "very serious" assault that took place in Upper Hutt on Saturday night.
Two men who were attacked by a man with a weapon in Upper Hutt - leaving one with life-threatening injuries - had called police before the assault to say they were being filmed.
One man received moderate injuries and was treated at hospital before being discharged.
The other victim was critically injured and remains in Wellington Hospital with life threatening injuries.
In a statement today, police confirmed the man's injuries were caused by blunt force trauma inflicted by an object, ruling out stabbing or gunshot injuries.
Detective Senior Sergeant Martin Todd said police had completed an examination of the crime scene and were now examining several exhibits.
"This was a very serious assault that was extremely traumatising for our victims and that has left one man fighting for his life," he said.
Todd urged anyone who has information that could assist the police investigation to come forward.
Anyone who was at the Caltex Remutaka Fergusson Drive area between 7.40pm and 8.40pm on Saturday night is urged to call police.
