The $US1.7 million plant, near the villages of Ga'utavai and Sili, feeds electricity to some 800 houses.

The prime minister, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, said the project is part of a plan for Samoa to be powered by 100 percent renewable energy by 2025.

Two more hydro power plants are due to be completed in the next three months.
