Government of Bougainville returns to Arawa

10:20 am on 22 August 2003

The government of the Papua New Guinea Island of Bougainville has decided to shift its administration back to Arawa.

The decision comes 14 years after the start of the civil war that prompted Bougainville's public service to move to Buka.

The acting Bougainville administrator, Aaron Rigamu, says the provincial executive council made the decision and the shift is scheduled to begin tomorrow. [FRI]

The Post Courier says business houses and government organisations in Buka are against the decision as they claim security at the former provincial centre is not yet guaranteed.
