A man has been shot and critically injured by police in Auckland after officers responded to reports of gunfire in the suburb of Papatoetoe this evening.
A major police operation had swung into action as officers descended on a Avis Avenue address at about 5.40pm. A shot had been fired through the window of a neighbouring home.
Police, including Armed Offenders Squads and the Eagle helicopter, were deployed.
Just before 8.30pm, a man came out of the first house with a firearm and was shot by police.
He has been taken to hospital in a critical condition.
A cordon will remain in place overnight and a scene examination will begin tomorrow.
