Fatal fire at Invercargill flats

A man has been found dead after an overnight fire at a block of flats in Invercargill.

Fire crews went to the property on Tramway Road just after 1am and found two flats engulfed in flames.

Southland Fire Service assistant area commander Deane Chalmers said crews searched through the block of five flats, finding a body in one of the units.

Other occupants of the flats managed to get out safely and are in the care of victim support.

Mr Chalmers said police were guarding the scene.

The cause of the fire isn't yet known and police and fire investigators will be carrying out an inquiry.
