U.S. government receives applications for American Samoa longline fishing permits

09:10 am on 20 April 2009

The U.S. government has received "several applications" for the American Samoa pelagic longline limited entry permits, in which at least 22 permits will be issued for various vessel class sizes in 2009.

Applications for permits, first announced in January and closing next month are being handled by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration National Marine Fisheries Service Pacific Island Region Office or PIRO in Honolulu.

PIRO official, Walter Ikehara, says they have received several applications.

But he didn't say if there were any from American Samoa.

Congressman Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin is encouraging local fishing vessels to apply before the deadline.

He says fishing is the life blood of the local economy and this is a great opportunity for local fishermen to become involved in the fishing industry in American Samoa.
