Research done off the New Zealand coast has identified 200 new faults that could trigger a tsunami if they created a major earthquake.
The study, conducted by NIWA and GNS Science, analysed 530 faults in the seabed around the country.
NIWA principal scientist Phillip Barnes is presenting the findings at the Coastal Society's annual conference in Auckland this week.
He told Morning Report that at some point, a major earthquake triggering a tsunami is likely and the more that is known about undersea faults, the better prepared the country can be for potential tsunamis.
