Vanuatu's Efate chiefs opposed to Minister's planned land reform

21:38 pm on 16 October 2013

The chiefs of Efate Island in Vanuatu have registered their opposition to plans by the lands minister, Ralph Regenvanu, to amend the constitution's articles on land.

Mr Regenvanu wants to make the transfer of leases on custom land more accountable and something that all stakeholders have a say in and benefit from.

A discussion on the proposed reforms is being conducted in Port Vila and chief Bill Kalsarap Kalpoi from Pango village near the capital says they have no issue with the current law.

He says there has been no consultation on the proposed changes.

"No consultation with the villagers, with the chiefs, even Malvatumauri. They are trying - they did contact the office of the ministry of lands but it happens that nothing happened. That is why, the reason why. They were left in total darkness, so they had to oppose it, we had to oppose it until it takes time - we have the process of consultation first."
