King and Coll begin world squash title campaign with wins

New Zealanders Joelle King and Paul Coll have begun their campaigns for a world squash title with wins in Chicago on Sunday.

King is currently ranked No.3 in the world, although seeded fourth for the tournament. She beat Egyptian Heba El Torky 11-6 11-9 11-6 in just 24 minutes to set up an encounter with another Egyptian player, 23rd-seeded Mayar Hany, in the second round.

Coll, ranked at No.6 but seeded seventh, had to work harder for his 3-1 victory over Karim El Fathi of Egypt. The Greymouth 26-year-old took 44 minutes for his 11-6 9-11 11-3 11-3 win.

He plays Australian Cameron Pilley in round two early on Monday afternoon (NZT).

Aucklander Campbell Grayson also recorded an opening win, taking nearly 50 minutes to down Nathan Lake of England 8-11 11-6 11-5 11-4 and earn a second-round match against Leo Au of Hong Kong.

The fourth New Zealander in action, Amanda Landers-Murphy, was beaten in straight sets by former world No.1 Laura Massaro (England) 11-4 11-3 11-8.
