American Samoa's Treasury steps up debt collection

The Credit and Collections staff at American Samoa's Treasury have been told to step up their collection of money owed to the government.

Treasurer Magalei Logovii wants to see the US$5 million in account receivables come down and says he is expecting results from his staff.

Each staff member of the Credit and Collection's division has been assigned a list of businesses and individuals owing money to the government and they have to submit monthly reports on their efforts to collect from each party.

Treasury sources say the list includes companies leasing government lands and bad cheques.

This figure does not include unpaid taxes or fines assessed by the Tax Office , which has its own collectors
